Definition
At the World Food Summit held in 1996, the concept of food security precipitated, and it was stated that “food security, at the individual, household, national, regional, and global levels (is achieved) when all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for a healthy and active life” (FAO 1996, 2009; Barrett 2010).

Gender equality and women’s empowerment are central to achieve food security for all, by raising levels of nutrition, improving agricultural productivity and natural resource management, and improving the lives of people in rural areas with full and equitable participation in decision-making (CFS 2017).
