Energy Startup Business Model: An Analysis of Scientific Publications and Trends for the Future

Abstract

Whether shaped by fluctuating energy and fuel prices, energy transition, environmental and security issues, aspects of technological innovations, or goals to improve access to energy, nowadays, attention regularly turns to ways to improve energy pathways. However, whatever is understood about change in the energy system, especially concerning new business models provided by startups, is still in its infancy. Therefore, this bibliometric search includes articles from the last 5 years, retrieved from Thompson Reuters Web of Science TM, and allows obtaining a complete view of citation, co-citation, and keyword analysis. Other emerging search streams were evaluated using Histcite and VOSviewer software. The results are divided into Bibliometric Survey and Citation Analysis, Co-citation Analysis, and Research Flow in the field of energy business model for startups. Regarding the first, an increase in related research was identified, beyond 2018 and 2020. Regarding the analysis of co-citation, a grouping about the frequency of cited authors identified five clues, in addition, the three most articles were identified. Finally, a specific analysis of the startups’ business model pointed out three major contribution strands of startups in (1) the dynamism of the traditional market, (2) in socio-environmental strategies, and (3) in the strategy facilitators: business model and technologies. This suggests that the literature on energy business models, specifically startups, seeks to achieve the energy transition through responsible innovations and technologies. The article aims to contribute to those interested in the topic and present suggestions for future studies.
