Abstract
This chapter presents an overview of the national education system in Vietnam. It identifies key features of the system, reports on its historical context, and introduces each of its constituent sectors. Vietnam’s capacity to develop its education system was restricted for a long time by warfare and poverty. It was not until the early 1990s that the government could adequately address the system’s needs. Progress achieved since then has been remarkable. Over the past three decades, strong and sustained economic growth made this progress possible. Vietnam’s Confucian heritage, whereby educational attainment is highly valued at every level within society, has also been critical. Young people in Vietnam are now attracting global attention for their scholarly achievements. The reform process initiated during the early 1990s must be maintained. However, the system continues to be weighed down by excessive bureaucracy. Though teachers are highly respected, their working conditions and their opportunities for professional development need further improvement.
