Definitions
Key performance indicators (“KPIs”) are used to monitor the performance of organization processes and programs in achieving their policy goals and plan objectives. Such indicators would play a key role in the evaluation and review of implemented marine plans to address SDG 14 targets.
Key risk indicators (“KRIs”) are used to monitor the risks that could undermine planned SDG 14 targets. Such indicators may include activities and their pressures that are the root causes of effects to biodiversity and human well-being.
Key control indicators (“KCIs”) are used to monitor the effectiveness of the management measures implemented to address SDG 14 targets. Effective management measures are needed to reduce the pressures generated by human activities to address SDG 14 targets.
Pressures are the mechanisms of State Change and Impacts on human Welfare on the marine environment that are generated by marine activities (Elliott et al. 2017).
