Social Inclusion and mHealth

Handbook of Social Inclusion

Abstract

The exponential growth of digital innovations and access to digital devices and the Internet has transformed the way people engage in daily life and access healthcare. The use of mobile health (mHealth) refers to the practice of medicine and public health that is supported by mobile devices. mHealth has been hailed as an important resource for addressing healthcare inequalities due to perceived benefits that include higher access to health information and care, lower costs associated with provision, greater anonymity, and reduced stigma associated with healthcare utilization for stigmatized conditions. However, while digital technologies hold tremendous potential in reducing healthcare inequalities, much work is still required in designing inclusive mHealth innovations that can be effectively accessed and used by all. This chapter aims to identify healthcare access and utilization barriers faced by communities who experience social exclusion and explores strategies for empowering social inclusion in mHealth design and research.
