Definition
Hazard refers to any physical occurrence owing to natural or human causes that is likely to result in significant damage, injury, death, or disruption of social and economic activity. Hazards also embrace yet to be identified factors that can manifest as future threats with diverse underlying causes (ISDR 2002). It is argued that hazards can be unique, progressive, or multifaceted in their source and impacts (Niekerk 2013). Every hazard is uniquely manifested and represented in terms of its location, intensity, and probability. Furthermore, vulnerabilities denote a number of underlying or consequential factors due to physical, socioeconomic and ecological conditions, which enhance the sustainability of a society to the effects of hazards (ISDR 2002).
