Abstract
While Germany and Japan strongly responded to their unexpected low scores after their participation in PISA in 2000 and 2003, respectively, the first noticeable public discourse within the US about international assessments happened in 2010 (Martens and Niemann in German Polit 22: 314–332, 2013; Wiseman in How the world learns: comparative educational systems. The Teaching Company, Chantilly, VA, 2015)
