The Basel Recommendations on Corporate Governance Principles for Banks are a set of high-level guidelines that provide standards on how banks should approach establishing sound and transparent decision making and risk management structures and processes (BIS 2015). Bank governance standards aim to enhance bank stability and the confidence that shareholders and stakeholders, such as creditors have in banks (Becht et al. 2011). The Basel Recommendations on Corporate Governance principles for Banks are published by the Basel Committee for Banking Supervision (BCBS) that is headquartered at the Bank for International Settlements in Basel, Switzerland. As banks play a key role in channeling funds to productive investments and in facilitating payments, good governance in banks is instrumental in promoting sustainable development and in preserving natural systems and social stability.
