Abstract

The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and its Children and Youth Version (ICF-CY) are presented with reference to communication disorders. Codes interesting for phoniatricians are compiled in detail in a comprehensive table.

To assure the effectiveness of treatment and rehabilitation in communication disorders, principles of evidence-based healthcare are introduced: systematic reviews, meta-analyses, randomised controlled trials, guidelines, position papers and expert discussions.

Legislative aspects including occupational safety and health directives are discussed with regard to the relevant areas of phoniatrics.

Basic principles of cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation of medical equipment are highlighted, with special emphasis on otologic and phoniatric medical instruments.
