Abstract

Small bowel and appendiceal malignancies are rare entities that constitute about 2% of all gastrointestinal (GI) malignancies with an incidence of approximately 8000 new cases per year in the United States. Cancers arising in these locations vary in histology, clinical presentation, treatment, and outcomes. Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are the most common type of small bowel tumors, accounting for approximately 44%, followed by adenocarcinoma (33%), lymphoma (15%), and sarcoma (8%). Given the low prevalence of both small bowel and appendix cancers, there is a lack of prospective randomized trials to establish clear evidence-based guidelines for treatment. Early stage tumors of the small bowel and appendix are usually treated by surgical resection. The role of adjuvant therapy is dependent on histology and stage. Adenocarcinoma of the small bowel and appendix are usually treated similar to colorectal cancer.
