Abstract
This chapter explores the development of the physical dimension within the Health and Physical Education (HPE) learning area. Evidence-based quantitative research suggests there are many health benefits from physical activity. Qualitative data gathered from: a national survey of primary school principals, Australian case study schools, a UK initial teacher education case study, specialist teacher preparation case study and US HPE educator questionnaires found that regular quality inclusive HPE lessons increased students’ participation and subsequent health. However, while the health benefits of physical activity (and quality physical education [QPE]) are known there are global issues with implementation, specifically in primary schools. H/PE lessons are required to be QPE and be guided by a sequential and developmentally appropriate whole school curriculum programme (WSCP), beginning in the early years.
