Organization of Tennis Clubs to Eliminate Barriers Most Frequently Specified by People with Visual Impairments

Abstract

Tennis is one of the most popular sports in the world. It is gaining popularity among people with visual impairments. Although the idea of blind tennis has been present for only a short time, more and more countries are getting involved in it. However, in order for people with low vision and blindness to be able to enjoy playing tennis, it is necessary to adapt tennis clubs to their capabilities and needs both as regards technical as well as organizational aspects. In Europe, tennis clubs that are adjusted to the needs of blind tennis players exist only in several countries. This article presents guidelines and recommendations on how to organize a tennis club for people with visual impairments based on literature review, unstructured interviews with managers of tennis clubs, blind players, tennis coaches, a local government representative, and school principals. The study was conducted in Poland.
