Abstract

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a non-obligate precursor to invasive breast cancer. With the growing use of screening imaging, the incidence of this entity is rising, but the clinical impact of finding these premalignant lesions on overall population health remains to be fully elucidated. Here, we discuss the trends in the incidence, detection, treatment, and outcomes of DCIS; along with surveying the literature regarding risk factors known to predispose to this condition.
