Abstract

Emerging and young adults choose diverse career paths, some opting for an experimental approach, while others pursue a direct linear course. Some elect an incremental strategy, seeking the social capital or specific skills that will position them for further leaps in the future. Many express dismay at the contrast between the challenge and intensity of college preparation and the often monotonous, rote, and unappreciative workplace environments. They seek and expect meaningful work that elicits a passionate commitment, and many note a period of retrenchment and reassessment following their initial, disillusioning career choices. Still, they search for a more permanent path and reserve the possibility to change course in the future; they acknowledge the importance of flexibility and openness to change in an uncertain career marketplace.
