ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the importance of two very different strategies for reducing the impact of stress on the functioning of the GI system in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Relaxation training turns off the stress response. The chapter includes detailed instructions for three specific relaxation exercises: deep diaphragmatic breathing; progressive muscle relaxation; and relaxing imagery. Physical activity, on the other hand, burns off the neuroendocrine “soup” that makes people feel tense and wound up and can exacerbate GI distress and discomfort. The chapter details a number of negative thoughts people might have about physical exercise and addresses each one in turn with more realistic, helpful thoughts that should reduce the motivational roadblocks to exercise. Finally, the chapter encourages the reader to practice a relaxation strategy every day and to engage in gentle physical activity at least once during the week.
