Intercourse after myocardial infarction

David Thompson Clinical Nurse Specialist, Coronary Care Unit, Leicester General Hospital

David Thompson explains why the role of the nurse is pivotal in advising the patient how to return to an active sex life after myocardial infarction

If the nurse is to restore the coronary patient to optimum functioning, his or her sexual needs cannot be ignored. Although discussion of this intimate aspect of the patient's life is often a difficult process for the patient, partner and the nurse, sexual counselling should be viewed as an integral part of the cardiac rehabilitation programme (1,2).
