Publication History

Publication Date:

Recent studies concerned with the distribution and interconnection of citations in the scientific literature are reviewed. Some of the properties of citations networks are examined and their implications for the methodology of information retrieval, the evaluation of the scientific literature, and the problem of literature obsolescence are outlined. The main features of citation indexes are described and discussed, and the need for further studies to test and evaluate them is emphasized.
