Primary prevention of systemic lupus erythematosus

The survival and quality of life of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have greatly improved in the last few decades,1,2 but long-term survival remains poor.1 In fact, adverse outcomes are mainly accounted for by long-term complications of the disease and adverse effects of drug therapy.

Although new biologic agents are being developed for the treatment of SLE, it will be many years before these drugs are widely used in clinical practice; therefore, in order to improve long-term prognosis, rheumatologists should adopt other approaches to the disease, including preventive strategies.3,4 As well as aiming to prevent complications of SLE and drug adverse effects, we should consider other preventive strategies directed at preventing the onset of SLE or its progression.
