Abstract

To tell the story of Viagra and its various predecessors objectively, we must take a look at what it is that Viagra treats. We cannot avoid the issue of male impotence—or erectile dysfunction as it is now known—and erectile dysfunction is a problem of the penis. This male organ therefore takes center stage throughout the stories in this chapter.

Notes

  1. 1.

Here, we face the same terminological dilemma as we did with Prozac/fluoxetine in Chapter 8. Since the world knows Viagra by that name rather than as sildenafil, the brand name is used in this chapter.
