Quick reference guide to Viagra as a pharmacy medicine

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society has produced a quick reference guide for pharmacists, in light of Viagra being reclassified as a pharmacy medicine in late 2017.

Blue sildenafil tablets on a table

A new quick reference guide  to the supply of Viagra Connect (sildenafil) as a pharmacy (P) medicine has been released by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS).

In November 2017, 50mg tablets of Viagra Connect were reclassified from a prescription-only medicine to P status. The tablets went on sale as a P medicine on 27 March 2018.

The guide explains what pharmacists and pharmacy staff need to consider before supplying Viagra as a P medicine, and provides advice on how to undertake the patient consulation. The guidance also outlines the public health benefits of the medicine’s reclassification: namely, the opportunity for early identification of cardiovascular risk.

The full ‘Sildenafil 50mg film-coated tablets, P medicine quick reference guide’ can be downloaded from the RPS website.
