Abstract

Erectile impotence is defined as the inability of the male to attain and sustain an effective penile erection in order to accomplish sexual intercourse to the satisfaction of both partners. Erection in the normal human male results from a stimulatory input from the various natural senses resulting in an autonomic, mostly parasympathetic, discharge causing the engorgement of the spongy tissue of the corpora cavernosa with blood. The net result is the distention of the tunica albuginea, a resilient fibrous elastic tissue containing the corpora cavernosa producing a tumescent penis. Disease or injury directly to the penile erectile tissue or to its blood or nerve supply results in erectile impotence.
